The 2018 Research Fair, organized by CRC, brought together industry and academia to foster research-based collaborations, improve research in CS@UPB and help transfer innovations to the booming Romanian IT industry.
The event started with a brief presentation by Costin Raiciu (CRC director) that explained what CRC is trying to achieve, and why the Research Fair is a first event of its kind in trying to match industry research interests with academic research. You can find the slides for Costin's talk here.
Next, the 2018 Research Grant recipients briefly presented their projects. Oana Balan discussed SAFE-VR, her project that aims help patients overcome their phobias by immersing them in a VR environment and automatically increasing or reducing the exposure to stress factors based on patient response. Oana's slides can be found here.
Alexandru Radovici described his work on ensuring IoT security without relying on hardware protection; the key idea is to take Google's web assembly and adapt to work on IoT devices, while creating an ecosystem of tools.
Marios Choudary's work aims to measure leakage from system-on-a-chip devices, extending the reach of physical side-channel attacks (such as template attacks) from microcontrollers to the much more complex SoCs (e.g. Cubietruck with and Arm Cortex A8), exploring the implications of such attacks on mobile security and devising countermeasures.
Iuliu Vasilescu's project aims to smartly ofload the processing done on robots to the cloud, in a bid to reduce the hardware costs of robots while increasing their flexibility. The key challenges are the correct splitting of functionality to be done locally versus in the cloud. A snapshot of Iuliu's prior, ongoing and planned work can be found here.
The Research Fair continued with an informal reception and a poster session on the first of the Precis building. The full list of posters is shown below.
